Teens in Grief

Teenagers JumpingWe understand how hard it is to find words to express emotions that come with death and loss.

In our Teens in Grief (TiG) groups we encourage young people to explore their feelings through music, art, craft and some physical activities.

If you aren’t able to attend one of FiG’s groups, then you might find some of these ideas helpful:

  • Write a poem or letter to the person who’s died
  • Keep a diary of how you are feeling
  • Go for a walk in the park
  • Make a memory box, full of letters, badges, photographs of your loved one
  • Make a mood board by using old magazine cuttings, about how you’re feeling
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Create a playlist of tunes for the person who’s died.
  • Play a game of rounders with your friends

More about Teens in Grief

Families in Grief hold one or two groups a year for young people aged from 13 years old upwards. The groups are free to attend, and are open to all bereaved young people living in North Devon and the Torridge area.

We understand that sometimes it’s quite hard to find words to express emotions that come with death and loss. We try to keep things very informal in our support groups. The idea is for you to meet other young people in the same situation as yourself.

The programme is called ‘Teens in Grief’ and it takes place over seven weekly sessions usually between 6:30pm – 8pm. The first session is always fun, and we do an activity like surfing to help you feel relaxed and get to know the other young people in the group.

In the following weeks we do creative and physical activities that help you to explore your feelings about the death of your parent, relative or friend. These activities include making a memory box, making a salt memory jar, climbing, playing games to help you understand grief and how to cope with difficult emotions. The last session takes place on the beach, where we say goodbye and make flaming boats.

How can I join the group?

If you are a young person aged 13 – 19 and you’re looking for support because someone close to you has died, then please contact info@familiesingrief.org

I’d like to chat to others in the same situation as me

Remember you’re not alone! If you’re looking to share how you’re feeling with others in the same situation then we have set up a Facebook page especially for bereaved young people. Please click here to join the Facebook Group.
