What to do when there’s been a bereavement in your school community: A practical guide for teaching staff
On average, one child in every classroom is bereaved of a parent – that’s one in every 29 children. This doesn’t include children who may experience the death of a wider family member or close family friend. Or even the death of a child or teacher at their school.
For teachers and others working in a school environment, these situations can be truly daunting. We may be afraid of saying the ‘wrong thing’. We may be very aware that we don’t have all the answers, and that we can’t change what has happened.
This is why we’ve created a practical guide just for you. We hope it will give you the confidence to know what to do when there’s been a bereavement in your school community.
We welcome referrals from all families and professionals. There are a few things that we’d love you to bear in mind when making a referral to us – find out more.
