The power of a penny…

Christmas came early to the castle this year!

Families in Grief (FiG) welcomed a team from Co-op this week to our new premises at Castle Lodge in Barnstaple.  Jenny Jessop, Co-op Community Member Pioneer and Colan Atkinson, Manager of the Co-op Bideford store, did not come empty-handed as they formally presented FiG with a cheque for £1,756 – an amount raised by Co-op members through the Co-op Local Community Partnership scheme this year.

By signing up to be a Co-op member, customers can raise money for their local community with a penny from every one pound spent on Co-op branded products or services going to their chosen cause. It means an impressive mountain of 175,600 pennies have been donated to FiG through the scheme through purchases made at the Co-op Bideford store and further afield.

Naomi Jefferies, CEO of Families in Grief says: “We are over the moon that so many Co-op customers chose to give their pennies to us! What may seem like a tiny donation in itself soon adds up – one penny at a time – to make a big difference. It’s only thanks to the generosity of local funders such as the Co-op that we are able to offer our support free of charge to bereaved families.  So on behalf of all of them – a heartfelt thank you!”

“We have thoroughly enjoyed supporting FiG through the scheme,” says Jenny Jessop. ”And it’s been great to hear about just what a difference our Member Pioneer Programme and Community Support can make to small charitable groups in our area.”

Although the cheque handover marks the official end of the partnership through the Bideford store, both Co-op and FiG are keen to continue our relationship through other forms of support and via other stores in North Devon and Torridge. 2024 looks set to be busy!
